cresteds at NC show

Grish Sep 06, 2005 07:12 AM

Went to the NC herp show over the weekend and saw some beautiful cresteds. One variety the breeder was calling a black and white harlequin was going for $200.
It reminded me of a pic I've seen in this forum only I can't remember who posted it. Lizard lady, possibly?

probably novo...
Terri (lzrdldy530) has a nice goldish/brown and white one named kermit as well.

Grish Sep 06, 2005 11:05 AM

Yes, that's the one I was thinking of. Sorry for the missed ID.
They're certainly beautiful, but I was surprised at the price, only because there were so many unique cresteds at the show. Usually, when the market gets saturated with a particular species, the prices drop.

yeah, i don't really know why there aren't more of them around. it seems as though the cream on the back is fairly common. definitely the whitest i've seen on mine though ( atleast in person) i guess it may also be difficult to find them with a very dark background color. pangeareptiles.com has some great specimens which he calls blonde harlequins.
also in his lines are possibly the best creamsicles i have ever seen. hopefully my black and cream will turn out female so i can breed it to my creamishsicle and see what i get.

Here's Kermit! Now if only he could figure out SEX! He is in with Toni, a dazzling velvety brown, gold and orange from Anthony and he seems STUMPED as to what to do with her!!!

terri, we'll definitely be talking about some things when he figures out what to do with her. you may want to temporarily introduce another male, or another female into the enclosure. watch them closely for 1/2 an hour or two some evening and make sure they dont get too aggressive and see what happens.
everytime i've ever had males in the same enclosure they get very aggressive, and will usually mount a female within 5 minutes after being re-introduced.

lzrdldy530 Sep 08, 2005 12:59 PM

I'll give that a try this weekend. Remember, I already promised you one of Toni's when she starts delivering. Kermit's crest is impressively large, too. I think his head is about 1/3 larger than hers.

man! that disappoints me. i searched every vendor thoroughly, for what i thought, and only saw a bunch of flames, there was one vendor selling some huge adults, although most were pretty dull colored (granted it was daytime too). at G&G's booth i saw that they had a couple of nice very young cresteds, including what looked like it would turn into a red flame (real red flame, not your average red bicolor or brown & orange flame).

do you remember where on the floor this booth was located? and was it crested lady???

Yeah, I remember exactly where it was located, and I don't think I've tossed the program yet, so when I get home from work I can probably look up the exact vendor.

After you go into the main entrance to Dorton, there are two entrances to the floor area from that side of the arena. This vendor was located between those on the first inner-circle, pretty much facing the Armstrong cricket booth.

Also meant to tell you that I don't think it was crested lady, and wanted to ask if you saw any Uroplatus geckos. I went to the show specifically for a gecko of that genus, but couldn't find even one.

hmmm...maybe it was carolina specialty pets you got it from?

anyway, there was only a single vendor carrying uroplatus at the show, and that was G&G reptile. they're great guys to deal with, and if you keep buying from them they keep knocking down prices as they recognize you. they had a TON of animals, and were located to the far right end of the 2nd middle row of booths (looking from the entrance). they carried lineatus, sikorae, and ebenaui, but nothing else this time. they always tend to have lineatus and sikorae, and in the past ive consistently seen them with fimbriatus too. sadly, they had nothing but males this time around. seems like their supply was dwindling from their last import. they should be at the SC show in about a month. ill surely be there.

and i forgot to mention how surprised i was with the quantity of cresteds at this show. in the past, i have been to a few shows which have almost nothing as far as the cresteds go. i went to the spartanburg show a lil more than a month ago and saw one vendor selling buckskins for $125 a pop. not too fond of how the "wholesale" prices at these shows really dont happen all that much anymore. as far as uroplatus go, most vendors sell them at, or even sometimes above your average prices (at the may show someone tried to sell me a WC female satanic for $200).

Dang, I hate I missed those Uroplatus! Don't know how that happened 'cause I walked around the place about 5 or 6 times looking and pricing. Oh well, if they were going for $200 a piece, couldn't have done anything about it anyway.

Damn, now I'm looking at the directory and I really don't know how I missed them. That's who I bought the frogs from Sunday, and the turtles I bought back at the Columbia show!!

Anyway, to answer your question about the black and white harlequin cresteds, I believe (not 100%), but I believe it was Brian Conley reptiles. I may very well be wrong, 'cause you see so much stuff at those shows, it all blends together after a while.
But I seem to recall that was the area.

I'll be at the Greenville show in Oct., maybe hook-up with some uroplatus then!

youll have competition with me and more than likely a few others, i almost always run into some other late stragglers looking to get some leaftails, but the best ones should go quick.

and i dont know if you misunderstood me or not, but the leaftails from that vendor werent $200. they pretty much give wholesale prices, the way prices on animals are "supposed" to be at these shows.

they usually sell them for around $60 a pop, makes you wonder when you look at the prices that are at least double that on the online classifieds.

Yeah, I did misunderstand. $60 is definately within reason.
Thanks, Mike
