A Hueco Mtn with orange...

Joe Forks Sep 06, 2005 10:50 AM

Finally...
Kudos to Gerold Merker for finding the best looking Hueco to date IMO. Finally a snake with some orange on it. Those of you that like those gray and black ones please don't take offense, as taste is purely subjective.

I guess Troy hasn't sent you his pic of the only (?) live collected Culberson county snake for the site. He has one his brother field collected in the Beach Mts a few years back.

Just the other day I was looking at that page wondering what happened to the Beach Mtn specimen. I checked the directory and I still have the photo so I'll repost it. Somehow I must have copied over the file (doh!).

Great snake, great photo! Thanks for sharing with the rest of us. We just got back from there myself [3 days before Gerry got there] and the best snake we saw was a suboc. Did find a great plains skink on the road under the street lights which I thought was pretty unusual. Tough place to hunt. Over 300 semis from 8:00pm to 2:00! Thanks again for the photo.

AAAARRRRGGGGHHHH!!! That's enough right there to keep me out. Or if I ever do show up I'll make sure and hoof it on foot.

Truth be told, I was walking when I found the snake just to keep away from the traffic. The snake was found on a cut about 18 inches up from the bottom. Two nights later i was again walking the cuts in the area and was told by the local constable that what I was doing was illegal. HUH? Was my intelligent response. He then stated I was creating a road distraction. I told him my car was parked off the road and I was walking..Furthermore, I added I had a hunting license which supposedly allowed me to do precisely what I was doing....he then told me to leave. I did but came back 20 minutes later to walk some more. By that time another group was there shining cuts as well. I told them of the incident and they said the constable had done exactly the same thing the night before to them. That is a first for me.....any others out there with similar experiences....just wondering.....Gerry

...makes its own rules. Each individual officer in turn has their own interpretation of those rules, depending upon their mood. I have been told that walking along roadsides with hand- held lights in Texas was illegal also. You can't win in this issue, so don't argue...just go elsewhere. That's my 2 cents worth, anyway.

That's a very pretty snake and a rare gem!
