What Kind?

uma39 Sep 06, 2005 03:08 PM

Hoping someone can help me figure out what kind of lizards have been living on my patio..

Just moved to Austin, TX and have had about 3 or 4 lizards living on my patio. There are 2 "older" lizards (not sure if they are full grown or not) and 2 very young ones.

The small ones look to be the length of an index finger, pinkish color and very friendly.

The two adults are about the length of a hand (give or take) and are almost a translucent color. One always runs away when I go on the patio but the other just hangs out.

Any help is appreciated!

They sound like Mediterranean geckos, which are small brownish pinkish lizards with translucent skin, brown mottles and little whitish bumps on their skin.

They sound a bit too large for med geckos if they are as long as a hand. Do they have a very long tail and do they move rather slowly?

Probably Mediterranean geckos (Hemidactylus turcicus). Common around houses in Austin, and no other lizards in the area would be translucent. A google search will turn up many pictures of them.

No, no picture unfortunatly. Just got moved here to Austin from Detroit and half the house is still in boxes.

I know we had some very long, skinny lizards at the house when I lived in South Carolina, and these aren't quite the same.

I noticed tonight when I managed to grab a peek at one of the smaller ones that it has some brown markings on its tail. They are rather quick as two of them scurry off rather fast when I go near them while the other two seem to like attention.

If I can pull any more off of what they look like I'll drop a note. Thanks so much for the responses so far!

Almost exactly except the body didn't really have any markings on it. The tail did have the same markings however.
