ringnecks in kansas

polosue25 Sep 06, 2005 03:33 PM

I recently moved out to kansas from new york, and have been out herping at the spillway of the local resevoir a couple times. Both times we've found ringnecks--the first a tiny one out in the open, then yesterday I flipped over a rock and found one about 4 inches long, both nice and healthy and active. Anyone know what type these might be, and how big they can get? We also have seen and caught a lot of collared lizards and a couple northern water snakes...I love it out here!

Hey,

If you got to se the venters of the snakes, a plain, solid belly would indicate that the snakes were Northern ringnecks. If they had speckles on the belly with a bright red tail, I will probably say Prairies. Hope this helps.

Cool, I used to fish at Rocky Ford. My mom still lives out by Milford Lake. I was at K-State from 78-83.

In the spring time you should look for small roads that run east-west and flip the rocks that are on the north side (facing south) and you will be amazed as to how many snakes you will see. In the last 2 years I made herping trips back to Kansas at the end of April and we found over 1,000 ringnecks on each trip (5 days herping on each trip). Plus a lot of the other species.
