Argentine B&W Tegu... And a few Questions

Magick Sep 06, 2005 04:30 PM

Hi,

I'm new to Tegus, having spent most of my time, energy & money involved with Ball Pythons & Monitors. After researching Tegus, I purchased this little guy/girl. I cannot get over the personality! I wish I had "found" this little jewel sooner.

I've read that Tegus can be probed. Is the process much different than probing snakes? Any help on probing would be greatly appreciated.

I have him/her in a large terrarium with soil/sand substrate, a hide, water & heat/light. Our monitors have custom built enclosures ranging in size up to 7' x 4' x 4'. I'm assuming that the basic needs of monitors and Tegus are similar (basking, hiding, humidity, and freedom to raom); I will be building a much larger permanent enclosure and would like suggestions.

Guess that's the basics, and a long enough first post Here are some pics of my yet-to-be-named guy/girl:

Nice little tegu you picked up. Now to get you and Ed to come get some monitors from me haha.

Probing them can nad has been done. It is similar to probing snakes but unless you know what your doing I wouldn't suggest it. Once your tegu is becoming mature you'll be able to feel spurs on males. Males also get huge heavy jowels compared to females. It is sort of like monitors once you have seen enough of them it is pretty easy to tell them apart in person without having to physicaly prod or poke at them.

I keep my tegus the same as I keep my monitors. Good luck to you and your new friend.
