Question about gravid female

hotback66 Jul 18, 2003 12:54 PM

I have a female that i think is gravid. She is about 8 inches long and only weighs about 46 grams. She is eating and even gained a little weight. I think that she might have been gravid when I bought her. Her stomach area is enlarged with two distinct large white areas. These are eggs right? My question is how long can or does a female hold eggs before laying? I fear that she may be impacted. Is there anything that I can do for her? I would take her to the vet, but the one near my house doesnt know anything about any herps (I live in a small college town). I took another one of my geckos to her and she told me that she wasnt eating because she didnt have UV light. I laughed inside and vowed to never see that vet again. I might be able to find a more compitent vet when I go to Cleveland, Oh, but that wont be for a few weeks. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
jason

The two eggs should be visible through the abdomen which you say they are so she is probably gravid. It can take anytime between 10-35 days for them to lay after becomeing gravid. She doesn't sound too thin to lay even though she isn't ideal weight. Make sure to feed her as much as she will take and don't forget to supplement. When she is ready to lay she will stop eating and start digging around her tank.

If you think she was due a while ago you could try giving her a warm bath and very gently massage her underside. I did that with a girl who was eggbound and she laid a few hours later. Don't do this unless you think she is really egg bound bc it is stressful.

Good luck

It can take anywhere from 10 days to 5 weeks for her to lay. Do you have a nesting box for her? If not, fill a container with peat moss or potting soil for her to lay them in. How swollen is she? Maybe if you posted a pic of her belly we could be able to help. Make sure you fill her with as much good healthy food as possible, and give her a calcium dish so she can lick up any calcium she needs for the eggs. Hope this helps,
Mac

My leo laid her first eggs a month after mating...make sure she has a humid hide box filled with damp bedding that can serve as a laying box for her. When you see her digging around in the laying box then you'll know she will be laying her eggs that day or the next. How long have you had her for???
