Hi, I haven't kept garters in years, but I remember once catching a stripeless phase eastern garter, the only one I have ever seen, and I am wondering how common they are? it had the usual pattern just no stripes, not even a hint of one.
Eastern garters in my area (central Ohio) are extremely variable. Here's a pick of a nearly stripeless male. I'd guess one out of 100 have stripes this obscure. Some others in the area are very widely striped, especially dorsally.

That one is similar, the one I found was much lighter in color. I really don't seem much variation here in Maryland, most are nearly identical.
I'm not good at the picture part of these forums. I would post some better examples if I could. Here's a pic of one of the dull brown red striped ones from within 200 yards of the other. There's 3 or four other consistant color variations plus dull&dark, all within 200 to 300 yards. I get the same thing in adjacent counties. I don't know if it's a central Ohio thing or what.
