new to tortoises... would like to get one

porkchop48 Sep 06, 2005 09:19 PM

I am interested in getting a tortise . I have no idea what kind to get. Could someone point me in the right direction? I would prefer one that stays under say 50lbs. I dont know where to start but would like to learn everything i can before i get one. Size i guess doesnt really matter. everytime you turn around i feel like i am buying or begging my dad or other half to build a bigger enclosure. I have experience with iguanas, bearded dragons, bullfrogs, cuban tree frogs, albino pac man frogs and im working on my large enclosure for red eyed tree frogs, water dragons oh and alot of experience with a slobbering farting bulldog( but idont think that counts here) I would really appreciate it if some one could give me some suggestions. Thank you for your info in advance Im open to all suggestions.

You for sure wouldn't want a sulcata if you want one under 50 lbs.
Greek tortoises are popular these days, but if memory serves me correctly a lot of them are WC so they usually have to be treated for parasites right away.
Russians are popular but they can carry a herpes virus & so should not be mixed with other species because of that.
Tropical redfooted or yellow footed make great pets.
Since they are not desert grassland torts like sulcata depending on where you live they're probably easier to feed than sulcata. They grow to be larger than a box turtle but they're not huge like sulcata torts.
Maybe take a trip through a couple of websites & read about the different species, here's a couple of URLS for that:

Good luck making a desicion.

IMO this is the best site on the web for sulcata:
