First Milk Question...

phiber_optikx Sep 06, 2005 11:38 PM

Well, I guess my question is this... Since (eventually) this will be my first milk, I am wondering which is the easiest to work with (assuming it is well started) I would like to get a younger one maybe a few months to a year? Tangerine honduran is hands down my favorite because I just sit here and drool over it! But if you guys think it would be best to start with a Sinaloan or a Peublan or Nelson's I love those too! What is everyone's opinion? Thanks again!

Here's a hypo honduran who's very mellow. He's about a year old but staying small. I guess if you go to a show you'd be better off. You could actually hold the snake and figure out his temperament. He's chill enough to just rap around my finger and be content.

Hope you choose a hondo!!

Honduran milksnakes make great captives and would be a fine choice for your first milksnake. They are hardy, great eaters and are easy to keep and breed. Like many milksnakes, hatchlings can be nervous and flighty but they will settle down with regular handling and they usually aren't biters. If tangerine hondurans are your favorite, go for it!

All three snakes you mentioned do well in captivity. When it comes to disposition, Pueblans are skittish as babies and calm down a bit as adults; Hondurans are very hard to handle as babies, but become very tame; Nelson's are the calmest babies and very much like corn snakes in how tame they are.

I work with all three types and each is a little different.

Nelson milks are real nice. My friend has an albino and his has never bit. A bit shy as a baby but great anyway. Once you hold him he is calm .
Do you like any kings I have a Queretero king and very calm even when I first got him as a baby but granted much smaller than my friends nelson just incase you prefer bigger snakes but very hardy and great to hold tho does hide most of the time.

I have a baby Nelson....it's quite nervous and edge and tries to escape from my fingers at any chance it can get...but it has never bitten or gotten aggressive, and I'm sure with some time and love, it'll calm right down.

If you want a hondo, get a hondo! I love mine! They are a little jumpy, but not too bad. The worst 2 jumpy snakes I have are a scarlet king and a red milk. Hondos are a little jumpy, handleable. You won't be dissappointed. They are beautiful. Go to a show and hold one. Derek Lee
