Albino Black Rat Prices...

phiber_optikx Sep 07, 2005 12:52 AM

Hey everyone... I am just curious... The average price on an albino black rat seems to be between $65-$75 and a lot of these that I have seen are extremely ugly/"dirty" imo. I have a pair of orange albinos that are so clean looking it is unbelievable! I would compare them to a candy cane (for you corn lovers) Not in coloration but in clean colors and almost flawless white backround. My question is... I plan on breeding my pair and was wondering, shouldn't I logically be able to get a better price (than the current going price) for such stunning animals assuming that the babies are as gorgeous as the parents? or do most people just charge as much for the "Grade-C" snakes as the "Grade-A?" Thanks for your time!

an orange albino is completely different from an ablino black rat snake. orange albinos are from massive amounts of selective breeding, along with some other mixes, of which I have no idea. Joliff should be able to help out here, but yes an orange albino I'd say would have a good price tag, however being a novice breeder don't expect to collect what Joliff will. He's been at it a long time and is awesome at his job.

I'm not expecting to make a living... Just wondering how much pocket change I can hope to collect... and since I got my 1.1 pair for free..... I'd say it will pay off to breed them. Everyone knows there is no money in corns and rats! (american rats anyway...)

Actually, you can probably get some really nice albinos for half that price. At most shows, the selling price is about $35 or so. Some breeders charge higher, and some lower. As far as colors, you will see that in any given clutch of albinos, as they get older and change colors, you can have a lot of variation from individual to individual. Scroll down and check out the pics I posted. The "ORANGE" one had siblings that turned more red and some even turned more of a hypo color. You could selectively breed for specific colors, but you are always going to have variation in black ratsnakes. Also, don't forget, there are two strains of albino, and when bred together, produce "normals" that are double het for both. You can see one of those in the pics I posted a few threads down. That pic is of a 2 year old breeding male. Feel free to email me if you have any more questions about your black ratsnakes or if you want more pics.

Do you happen to have any pics of it as a hatchling and yearling? Dwight's animals are great, aren't they. Too bad he has tapered off a bit. I can't wait til he comes back full force again.

I have seen nice looking ones for like $60.00 shipped.

It really depends on who's selling them... Wholesalers/small time breeders will sell them for cheaper. While businesses who need to pay salaries will charge more.
