Not only do I have a feeding problem but now I have a temperature problem too.....

heffner2212 Sep 07, 2005 09:36 AM

Ughh this is really getting me fristrated alrerady. Now today I look at the ambient temp in the closet and its 76!!!!!! its usually 82 nothing is different I do not get why it dropped. The heat lmap is in the same place and everything. There is no reason it should drop to 76! I might just be done with snakes until I get my own apt that why I can just heat a whole room and keep all my snakes in there.....

Why do you want to use a room for your ambient air?WHat kind of heat source are you using, a under tank heater, heat tape?Seems like your more willing to give up than to fix a easy problem.

At least you keep on trying to fix the problem.Don't worry we all went through the same problems. The AMBIENT temps are probably one of the most IMPORTANT because it mimics the natural habitat of the blood python.Remember they come from a very hot and humid jungle. The ambient temps also control the amount of HUMIDITY that you have in the enclosure.I keep the ambient temps at 83-85.YES THAT HOT.Try using ceramic bulbs since they are better at heating the air. They are expensive and you might have to experiment at first.Rember HOT and HUMID.

I am currently using this enclosure for boa's ,howeverI have used it to house bloods in the past. The important thing is how I closed off the screen top with CLEAR 3/4 INCH PACKING TAPE and PEXI GLASS cut to fit.I use a ceramic heat lamp and under tank heater connected to a reahostat.(temp gauge)VERY IMPORTANT.

I forgot to stress that without the proper ambient temps you can not maintain humidity. The air has to be warm enough to hold moisture.Bloods won't eat if isn't humid enough.Use substrate that can hold humidity like wood chips or moss.Put a water bowl slightly resting on the under tank heat tape.Partially resting not the whole bowl. That should pump up the humidity.

HERE'S MY BLOOD ENCLOSURE

That's what I do at least. I've turned an unused closet into a snake room. I have a Ranco theromostat hooked up to a space heater to control temperature. Although I haven't needed it yet, I have a humidifier ready to be hooked up to a timer...Alabama is a "bit" humid this time of the year. Get rid of the heat lamp, they destroy humidity...invest in a oil filled space heater hooked up to a thermostat (don't trust the one on the space heater). It's also good to have a small fan in the room to keep the air circulating.

The closet is too small tom put a space heater.....Ok well the temps are good again I fixed that but now What more can I do about humidity? Would it help If i covered the cage?

You don't need an oil filled heater...I used a small heater (the fan type ones...cost about ~$20-30 at home depot)for a while. They are quite small.

For humidity...yes, cover it!

1. Use an under tank heater (set to 91 with a good thermostat)
2. Cover it
3. Heat the whole room (~81)
4. If you are still worried...soak your blood in the sink every morning while you take a shower...they love it. Just make sure to use LUKE warm water!

Don't go soaking your blood every morning untill he's eating regulary. If he's not even eating right now, plus you've been handling him and has stopped eating, so I'd wait on any extra handling for now.
