Hey Will,

I was just wondering about a few things -

Seeing as Jags and Tigers are generally accepted as being 'genetic mutations', how many founding sires have the captive bred populus originated from?

And;

What proportion, at a guess, of the captive bred populus are inbred?

Cheers,
Aaron.

Aaron,

As far as I know, both the Jaguar and the Tiger are unique and started with a single founder animal. The first Jaguar was produced in '94 by Jan Eric Engell of Norway, and the first Tiger supposedly originated with Neville James of California back in about '95. All Jaguars and all Tigers are direct descendants of these two animals.

However, if you consider that both of these morphs are thought to be co-dominant(ish), a different non-Jaguar, or non-Tiger, parent can be utilized with every generation. This means there is ample opportunity to introduce fresh genes into the line every time you breed them. All of this is in stark contrast to recessive mutations which often involve the offspring being bred back to the parents, etc.

Thanks Will,

I wasn't sure if the gene was recessive or semi-dominant/dominant.

Cheers,
Aaron.
