Vine snake was gravid

13lackcat Sep 07, 2005 01:20 PM

The girl from the last post turned out to be gravid, I'm happy now, I was so worried she had some other problem. She had 7 babies that all appear to be doing well. I'll post pics later, I don't want to disturb them right now.

Vine snakes are so seldomly bred, can you give us some back ground information? Here are some questions I have, if you have the time:

1. What species?

2. How long have you had them.

3. What do you feed them, any supliments? and how often?

4. What kind of enclosure?

5. What kind of lighting and heating are you using?

6. Do they have exposure to natural sunlight?

7. How often do you mist them?

8. Have they had any seasonal cues? i.e. daylight hours changing; seasonal temperature changes; humidity etc.

Thanks this is very helpful, also let me know if you want to part with any!

1. What species? Ahaetulla prasina

2. How long have you had them. I've only had them a little less than a year, so this is a big surprise.

3. What do you feed them, any supliments? and how often? The female is eating 2 live fuzzy mice once a month. The male is less eager to feed on mice and sometimes goes on a hunger strike and I've had to force feed him. The babies have shown interest in mice scented with lizards, but are yet to eat, I'm hoping to get them eating pinkys without having to force feed them(I can't get a reliable inexpensive supply of anoles). I haven't used any supplements but I feed my mice really well and use vitamin powder on their food.

4. What kind of enclosure? I keep them in a tall 60 gallon glass aquarium with a screen front that I have a towel over to help keep the humidity in. They have alot of plastic branches and fern leaves to hide in and a water dish to soak in. It's hard to see them through all the leaves sometimes. I keep them all together and have yet to see a problem. I just separate them when it's feeding time.

5. What kind of lighting and heating are you using? I have a UVA/UVB heat bulb above the cage. The humidiity is always kept high and the temperature at the top of the cage is around 93 degrees and at the bottom around 78

6. Do they have exposure to natural sunlight? Yes they are right by a window and I think that is important because they are most active during the day.

7. How often do you mist them? I mist them as often as possible, usually around 5 or 6 times a day

8. Have they had any seasonal cues? i.e. daylight hours changing; seasonal temperature changes; humidity etc. I haven't kept them that long, but in my observation as long as you have artifical sunlight and keep the temperatures up during the colder months they seem to be just fine and I don't think they need a seasonal cool down in order to breed.

Hopefully I'll get all the babies eating sucessfully and my pair will breed again. Maybe it's just a fluke or maybe they really are easier to care for than many people think.
