Help - 2 Cresteds sick - new to this

andrews-mom Sep 07, 2005 01:42 PM

My 9 yr old got a crested at the end of may that was healthy and has grown well until recently. A few weeks later we got another one that was in the same cage with the first one (I felt sorry for it - it appeared sick and lonely and they sold it to us for $25.00 don't think they were sure how to take care of these guys) Anyway the 2nd crested had a lesion on his hind leg which look like a gray scare but it was really thin and not very active. We still can't get him to eat crickets or other food but it seems our first Gecko is declining in health now - his limbs are all swollen and he isn't eating the baby food like he was. I have to hand feed him off of a toothpick of babyfood and the TRex diet and a little honey. Which he doesn't eat much of..last night it was like his tongue just kept getting stuck and then he threw up everything he ate. He has never done this before. He is still active but I am very worried about him and the 2nd one we got later. I have read some on the internet but am unsure how to help these little guys - I feel bad I am not sure how to take care of them.. please give any advice!!! I have a humidfier in the aquarium maybe it is too humid in there??? A guy at the petstore told me to do this!!!

"please give any advice!!! "
ummmm, don't put a sick animal in with a healthy animal?

honestly though, first thing you need to do is separate them.
then research their exact care requirments for an hour or two. check out breeders sites like acreptiles.com
keep them in simple cages with paper substrate until they recover so you can monitor fecals. the very best thing you could do is take them to a qualified reptile vet, but those are very hard to come by.
check out the link on anthony's page about cresteds and diseases and the post by randy may.
all you can really do is separate them, and keep them in clean enclosures where you can monitor them more easily and without the stress of one another.

If there is a university near-by, see whether they have a veterinary teaching hospital. That's what I did when my former breeder "Popcorn" prolapsed, and they had reptile vets (SEVERAL) on staff to fix him up. Good luck!

First off, buying a sickly animal was a bad ideal. Putting him in with your healthy gecko, was another bad ideal. But you are new and we all make mistakes. Something to learn by and remember for the future. Any new animals should be quarenteed for at least 3 months.

At this point, the only thing to do is separate your geckos. Have both checked by a qualified reptile vet and treat them. I would concentrate on getting your orignial one healthy, as it was healthy before being made sick by the introduction of the sickling one and more likely to recover.
