New Cane Toad!

foreverfrogs Sep 07, 2005 07:11 PM

Just thought I'd share a quick pic of my new Cane Toad. I've had him nearly 2 weeks. He's about 4" long and is eating well. He's spends nearly all his time under his hide so I rarely see him. Althought I do know he comes out at night to soak in his water bowl becuase I see that the water is dirty in the morning (but he's back under his hide by then).
He hates being disturbed. If I lift his hide off him so I can feed him he puffs up and then makes a hissing sound through his nose.
It would be interesting to hear from anyone else who has cane toads and if theirs behaves in a similar way. Have I got one thats just a bit nervy or are they always this secretive?
All responses appreciated

He's a cutie, btw

I have never had Cane Toads as pets, but I do have a colony of Western Toads. Some of them don't mind handling, where as others freak out when I remove the top of the cage. I think it's just the personality of the toad.

Also, one of my Western Toads has a jug that he loves hiding in. I find him in there almost every time I go to check on the guys. I've had him 6 months and it's yet to pose a problem, so I think that toads (in general) just like to hide. They find a place that's comfortable to them, and stay there. I'm sure your toad is just doing what makes him happy.

Don't worry. Your toad is acting 100% like a normal cane toad. Actually both cane toads and rococos (closely related) have the same behavior. They hiss and puff whenever you approach them. They will eventually do it much less when they get used to you. Meanwhile, provide him the safety of his hide hut and it will be fine.

I have 3 canes that are just as nervous.. I have heard of some becoming as tame as dogs. I would guess with patience and very gentle handling, you could tame them up... or maybe try hand feeding??? They like food...
