tadpole and newt

SeaStar427 Sep 07, 2005 10:47 PM

Hey,
I have a fire belly newt, and was wondering if puting a large leopard frog tadpole in the tank with him would be a bad idea. I wouldn't keep the tadpole with him forever, just while he's a tadpole. If this is a bad idea then I'll just get another tank before i get the tadpole to put it in. Thanks

To be on the safe side, I'd get a different tank. I believe leopard frog tadpoles may be carnivorous. You would also be adding a wild caught animal to a captive animal's enclosure, which is never a good idea without proper quarantine first, in which time your tadpole will be a frog.

To my knowledge, these tadpoles are herbivorous (sucking/disk mouth parts). However, I would definately get a seperate little tank for it, for the reasons Ian already stated.

First, the firebelly toads are extremely toxic to other animals...especially other frogs...since they absorb stuff through skin.. Second, the FBTs are very aggressive feeders... Unless the tadpole is twice the size of toad..it will be lunch..or at least parts of it will..tail fins, newly formed legs.. anything that will fit nicely into a toads mouth will do...

Best thing is to set up separate home for tadpole..you will need different home after it morphs, so might as well do it now..

Exactly what sallie_keeper said. You don't want to end up with a mixing disaster. Both species come from separate parts of the world, and firebellies are very toxic to other species. Don't risk it.
