Eating Grass...ok?

elgrano Sep 08, 2005 09:09 AM

Hi guys
I am not new with reptiles but new with tortoises...I just got a baby Sulcata and a 5inch Russian. I have a setup for them inside the house but I am taking them every day outside so they can catch some real sun light and eat some grass, it's this ok?
Also, any idea on how old is the 5 inch Russian? and how can I determine the sex of the baby Sulcata?
Thanks for your help! I really need it...

I'll address the questions about the Russian.

Mine eat grass all the time, along with weeds and greens.

As long as the lawn has not been treated with chemicals recently, grass is fine. I don't know how long you'd have to wait after having a lawn treated because I never use chemicals on my lawn. Or at least I didn't until the yellowjackets attacked :->

A 5 inch russian: I have a CB male who is a little over 3 years old and about 5 inches. I have a mature male who is probably close to 10 yrs old who is about 5.25". Or, you could have a small adult female who is still growing. I have female russians who are 6.5" and 7" long and have laid eggs for a 3-4 years now.

Final answer: Who knows. Depends on environment, diet, subspecies, gender, individual variation, etc.
