if the snake needs the light for the heat then yes you need to leave it on... if the snake is heated by another source then the light is only needed when viewing the snake...

hope that helped

no problem...

i should probably also throw out their that Chondros do not need any special lighting, in fact they dont require any... the 2 major factors with these snakes it the temp and humidity... if both of those are good then you should be good to go...

Snakes do not see the red light so you can leave it on all the time. I went to a ceramic heat emmiter because the red light turning off and on all night in my bedroom made me feel like I was in the red light district! Couldn't deal with it. In another room....no problem.

Doesn't a thermostat on/off style of maintaining temperature significantly reduce the life spand of a bulb, incandescent, ceramic, or otherwise?

I don't use an on/off, I use a proportional thermostat. It still occasionally turns off the heat if it starts getting too warm due to outside air temps being warmer. When I had the red light though, I was using an on/off. Every few seconds....on.....every few seconds....off. Got annoying in the dark!

I use red bulbs for all my heating and for night veiwing. I use a good thermostat to keep the temp up and I also spray them down twice a day once in the morn and once at night.HJope this will help

Also, they sell 2 types of lights that are3 red. One is an infrared that snakes cant see and the other is a red coated light that is softer than normal light, but I beleive reptiles can see it. The infrared is about three time the price.

I had never used a red bulb until I started keeping chondros. I have used the GE 25 watt red bulbs, and none of my chondros seeme to be stressed by it being on at night. They still seem to know it is "night time", when the room light is turned off, and behave the exact same way they had before I used the red bulbs(ie., waking up, prowling, eating).

I use red bulbs in my snake rooms, I leave them on 24/7. They are called party lights lol I get them at Lowes or Home Depot. They don't bother the snakes and heck the mice and rats can't see by them either. Randy
