Two turtles in one egg

chaosbug Sep 08, 2005 12:06 PM

I have a clutch of box turtle eggs that are about 1 week away from hatching. However, one of the eggs unexpectedly split open prematurely. When I peeked inside to investigate, I found two tiny about 85% grown hatchlings. The yolk sack is still really big. Is there any way I can keep these guys alive until they have formed a little more. The egg split all the way across from top to bottom. I have covered it up with some moist dirt and am keeping it moist. Is there anything else I can do?
thanks, ryan

That is always a most interesting occurrence. If it ever happens again, use a more sterile item such as a moist paper towel with which to cover the split (regardless of how many neonates are inside) since dirt is, well, dirty, and can also clog all sorts of factors within the egg should any get inside. If they don't make it, don't feel bad, since the majority of egg twins don't survive even if they go full term.

Gently tape it together. i heard of this and working.
that'd be WILD getting twins!!!!!!!!!!!

I'd name them Leo and Raph cause those two ninja turtles are alot alike even though they dont get along well
