What is the difference between an aztec and a zigzag???

Colorfulcorns Sep 08, 2005 12:22 PM

I just got 16 baby corns from another breeder and some of them have wierd patterns. She said that the banded female was breed with an aztec male het for amel. To be an aztec or a zigzag does the pattern have to go the entire lenght of the body??
Pics will help greatly..

To answer the title question... best differentiator I can offer is that a zigzag looks like just that, a zigzag marking. Aztec is far more random. Neither behaves like a single gene.

To answer the second question... to call a cornsnake an aztec or a zigzag, the corn should have most of its pattern be aztec or zigzag. If a corn only has a few zigzagged saddles, it's more correct to say it has some aztec (or zigzag) markings.

"Mice. And rats. If that bothers you, I can call them 'cows' instead."

Kathy Love created the zig-zag zipper corns around the same time period that John Albrecht was creating the aztecs as they became known as(named by Zuchowski years later)........

they are basically the same/.........

unpredictable genes they really are.......you can breed aztec to aztec and get hardly any aztec-ing in the babies.or an azytec to normal and get the same or better results.....

better patterns make better patterned babies......if not.switch the couplings........

.........aztecs can be patterned as little aztec......full aztec......full wide striped........or zig-zags......or combos of all or none.......

sad......LOL....

never worked with real Love stock Ziggies.......but I think you can get all sorts of baby patterns from them too......

..........have fun

I guess mine are partial zigzags. The zigzags are only two to four saddles long..

Since the patterns have a lot of overlap and some show traits of each other pattern, I think it is nothing more than marketting hype on SLIGHT difference to try and get more money for an old morph. Some just look BETTER or more abnormal than others. We work heavily with that type of mutation. Around the shop, we just half-jokingly call evenerything in that genre a "ZagTec" and forget about the difference. Let the buyer of the offspring call it whatever THEY feel is more accurate.
