Tortoises

uneek78 Sep 08, 2005 02:11 PM

I want to get a tortoise, but I don't know what the best one to start off w/. I'm also curious about the expense. Are they expensive to feed? Do they eat extremely often? Which breed is the best for a beginner to have? Does anyone here have a preference for certain breeds of tortoise and why?

I personally find tortoises easy to care for once you get everything setup right from the beginning. My tort grazes outside and gets a mix of things from the grocery store like greens, cactus, etc. I like it much better than when I had reptiles that required live feeders. There are a lot of factors in deciding which tortoise to get. It is best to tell us what kind of environment you can provide and then see which torts would work well for you. For instance if you live in an apartment, then really large torts are probably out. To have an easier to care for tort, make sure you get a captive bred and not wild caught. Should be healthier and more used to people. To help you choose the species (not breed, sorry pet peave) let us know 1) what size tort you had in mind 2) what kind of set up you had in mind, access to outdoors etc 3) what climate you live in.
