What to feed a young/small gecko?

PopeKevinI Jul 18, 2003 02:51 PM

Yesterday I found what appears to be a very young Banded Gecko. It's less that two inches long, and surprised my wife in bathroom cabinet

I'd love to keep it, but I'm having trouble finding something it will eat. I picked up some mealworms, but they're apparently too large.

Does anyone know what geckos this small generally eat?

You can order pinhead crickets or fruit flies online. I bought 1/4 size crickets from www.wormman.com a couple of weeks ago with great results--all live and shipped quickly. Crickets go out on Tuesdays, so if you place an order today it won't ship until Tuesday, but the gecko will be fine until then.

I'm guessing what you have is a Mediterranean Gecko, Hemidactylus turcicus. The young are usually more brightly colored than the adults, and all usually have banding on the tail.

I doubt it's a banded gecko if it was in your bathroom cabinet! I find Med Geckos all over my house in south TX--where are you?

I live in the north Dallas area.

The gecko is a pale/sand color, with darker mottled spots. It has bands all down its tail. The Utah/Texas Banded Geckos are the two I found pictures of that looked anything like it.

This is what you have:

On some individuals the tail banding is more pronounced, especially with juveniles. Mediterranean Gecko.
