So...repti-bark is safe...but...

steen Jul 18, 2003 02:51 PM

is calci-sand? I was told that repti-bark can irritate snakes' eyes...is this true? Also, I've heard a lot of controversy over the use of calci-sand...that's what I have in my tank now (don't have the corn yet though ). Do I need to be worried about it or will it be fine on the sand? Thanks a ton!!

I personally use aspen shavings. They are cheap. They look pretty good and the snakes can burrow under the shavings creating another "hide" for them.
I'm not sure but I just don't think the calci-sand is the way you want to go with a corn snake.

Thanks, Jimmy! If it's not the way to go, can I wait until it's time to clean the cage to switch over? Or do I need to switch ASAP? Thanks again!

is that I have heard that sand of any kind is definitely not the way to go as it can get into openings on your snake that should not have sand in them. It also is not easy to keep clean and can be kind of drying. Just my opinion, but I would swap it out now before you get the snake. I know that sand costs a lot of money and it seems a shame to waste it, but a vet visit costs more.

Thank you so much for your advice...this just sucks! I'll switch to aspen shavings before my baby gets here next week. The good news is that I didn't pay TOO much for the stuff, because I work at a pet store. (not chain!) Guess I'll just have to cut my losses on this one...should have researched substrate a little more, rather than believing the packaging...(really? you think?? ) Thanks again...I really appreciate it, and I'm sure my new baby will too!
