Need info on Turkistan roaches

newyorkrita Sep 08, 2005 06:35 PM

Am interested in these small non climbing roaches but don't know anything about them. Are these egg layers or live bearers?

They are Blatta lateralis. I did a google search with the scientific name, and found a little info. They are egg layers. Good luck. What are you feeding? Derek

Yes, they are egg layers. I just got 25 from James Tuttle a couple of weeks ago. I am not going to feed them off yet as I want them to get started well. I have sooo many mouths to feed!

Anyway, the 25 was a mix of a few adults and ranging down to nymphs. Already I have seen at least 4 egg cases laying in the tub so I know they are reproducing. Nice thing about egg cases is that you can move them to a new tub for raising if you need lots of small feeders for babies or smaller lizards. I haven't separated them out yet though for the same reason I haven't fed any off!

Best place for roach info, other than this forum, is www.angelfire.com/oh2/Roaches/. I got my roaches from www.blaberus.com.

How long does it take for the egg cases to hatch? All I have ever dealt with are live bearers so I am not sure about the care of agg laying species.

For anyone raising these and Lobster roaches, how does the reproductive rate compair? Which do you like better?

Females drop egg cases every 14 days and they take weeks to hatch. These roaches will reproduce as fast as lobsters if kept properly.

What do the egg cases look like? Are they big enough to be easily seen?
