it is pretty likely that it would eat f/t (frozen / thawed) pinks, which you can order online from places like RodentPro.

If it refuses f/t, ask if you can buy a pregnant female mouse and you will have some pinks soon.

Your snake can easily go a few weeks without feeding if it is healthy, although you should try to feed it every 5 - 7 days or so if possible.

I'd recommend breeding your own mice. Its really simple and you can freeze and store the pinkies until needed. If you only have one core, one male and one female mice should be plenty.

you forgot to mention how horrible male mice smell.... I would wait till it is old enough for rat pinks and then start breeding (rats don't really smell...)

Or...
You can feed frozen/thawed.
No fuss no muss with cages to clean etc...
You can buy 10 or 20 frozen pinks (or whatever) at a time and thaw as needed.
And I think most petshops carry it, Im sure Petco and Petsmart do.

Of course, he could buy f/t mice, but as he stated his local pet store has a limited supply and doesnt seem to stock often. Breeding your own mice can be little bit of a hassle, and they do smell, but it will save you time and money in the long run. It would help him to stock up before he buys his next corn. As somebody's signature says.. "Corn snakes and rat snake, nobody can have just one."
I forget who uses that sig, but its soo true.

Just to let you know Petsmart does NOT sell pinkies frozen or otherwise. They do not sell animals for food. I don't know about Petco. They only places I have found in town are independent shops.

starsevol Sep 10, 2005 08:15 AM

Sorry about that. I think petco does though. "Mice on Ice".

raisnok Sep 10, 2005 09:52 PM

because they told me they didnt sell animals for food, the manager told me and i told him he was a bold face liar, because they sell crickets, and feeder fish..... dont single one group out in my opinion, they sell everything else to make money off snake keepers. i honestly think they hate to see me walk into that store.....LOL

Thats why I boycott that incredibly hypocritical pet store. They sell snakes but not pinkies to feed them. That in itself is animal cruelty.
Thats the most hypocritical thing I ever heard. I went to one while ago to buy pinkies and they almost had a heart attack when I asked to buy some.
Meanwhile they sold baby pinkie eating sinolan milksnakes. I asked the manager if they fed them pizza and left.

i dont know about petco, because we dont have one here. but the petsmart here doesnt carry feeder mice and rats of any kind, they wouldnt even order snake steaks for me. and the one here does not sell snakes.

Allecto Sep 11, 2005 02:30 AM

I'd try online before I went to Petco for frozen feeders. The ones here sell frozen pinks for $1.25 each (at least, that's the very cheapest I've seen) and even my piggy snakes will refuse Petco frozen feeders more often than any other meal. I don't know why for sure, but I do know that they store them with all sorts of 'live' fish food and other garbage that might give them a funky, non-mousy smell.

>>i dont know about petco, because we dont have one here. but the petsmart here doesnt carry feeder mice and rats of any kind, they wouldnt even order snake steaks for me. and the one here does not sell snakes.

Yep Petsmart has chosen not to sell mice or snakes for that matter. That's thier choice.

PetCo sells frozen mice.
They have the "Mice On Ice" and they also have frozen mize from Gourmet Rodent.
Get the Gourmet Rodent mice. They are better then the "Mice On Ice"
If you only have one or two snakes the price isn't that hard to handle.
A couple of dollars a week. not bad.
I have quite a few more snakes then that so I order through RodentPro. Several hundred at a time.
There are times when I am between shipments and might need a few pinkies or something else and PetCo is my only choice. No more reptile shops or Mom-and-Pop pet stores around here any longer.
I have never had a problem with my snakes refusing the Gourmet Rodent frozen mice.
Mice stink WAY to much for me to breed. To me it is NOT worth the trouble.
Unless you have a shed or building seperate from your house.
Some day I might have to breed my own but as long as I can sell a few babies and break even or come close to breaking even each year I will buy my mice.
I am in this as a hobby. Not to make money. It is just nice to be able to break even or come out a little ahead. makes the hobby easier.
Which by the way...I made enough this year to cover the price of mice and aspen shavings plus a little extra.
I'm HAPPY......LOL

Does rodent pro send it with dry ice and to your door or it has to be picked up at airport?
thanks
