Some brumation questions...

lele Sep 08, 2005 06:57 PM

Hi all, need some input here...

Darwin seems to be eating less, spending more time under his rock and less basking. My friend/breeder said it may be the beginning of brumation but since he is lees than a year I should try to keep him on a regular schedule so that he does not go into it. I am not questioning her at all, and in fact that seems to be the general consensus, but I would just like to hear form other folks - especially if you have/had a bd less than a year go thru brumation and if all was OK on the other end of it - so to speak. He was born 2/10/05, weighs about 265-270g and almost 16" long. He is in the middle of another (perpetual shed) which says he is growing, which begs the question: if he does brumate this year will it impact his growth/development at all.

Thanks for input!

I dont have anything to help you (sorry!) but im interested in learning about brumation too. My female hasnt brumated the last two years, but i am a worry wart and would like to know what to do if she does. Any tips, advice, or links to good sites with good brumation info would be greatly appreciated!

Im most concerned with:

how much (if at all) to feed her during brumation?
what to do with her light cycle? Shorten or change it at all?
signs to look for that all is not well.
typical signs that she is about to brumate.
how long will it last?

i dont mean to steal your post lele, but i was gonna make my own and figured i would just add it onto here!

No problem - many of your questions I would be asking sooner or later! There does not seem to be hard and fast rules so I hope a lot of members post to this thread. Where do you live - oh are you the one in Maine who sees Dr. Guerino? - or am I confusing you with someone else...I just wonder how much of a difference location makes. I am in NH. Anyway, lets get this rolling!

I live up in Strafford (about 35 minutes northwest of Portsmouth). Hey, are you going to the show in Manchester in October - at least I think it is in Oct. - have to check. I have never been to the Portland show - have you?

Dr. G and staff are great. I think he was near tears when Luna died I got a call today from a woman in Eliot who ran over a butterfly with her lawnmower. She had called a bunch of vets to see if anyone could help it. Holly, who works at AMC, knows that I raise moths and butterflies so she gave her my name and number! I thought it was so cool that this lady cared enough to help this butterfly! And what were the chances that she would call a vet who knows a local Lepidopterist! lol!

Thanks, Randy. I had read that article when I was doing my research but had forgotten where it was! It is now bookmarked.

I guess I will just watch him. He is only 7 months old, but is acting sort of depressed. I am bringing in a fecal on Monday.

I had a bearded dragon who went into brumation during her first year. The apartment temperatures dropped in the winter and it was hard keeping her night time temps up. She brumated fine, for about 4 months, before coming out of it completely. She still put on a few more inches after brumation so it doesn't affect growth too much. The only real concern is making sure they are healthy with good fat reserves to last them throughout brumation. My female lost about 50g during brumation. She would wake up for a day or two, sometimes just a few hours every week or so. I feed her lightly during this time, as I didn't want her to go into brumation again with a full belly. I also shortened her daylight times once I saw she was going into brumation and wasn't likely to change her mind.

Great pics of Darwin...he looks like such a grumpy dude, there! I wish I had something to add about brumation, but all my knowledge of it comes through reading, too. I tried to get Gordo brumate last year, but he refused! I reduced his light hours, dropped the temps...nothing. He just wouldn't do it. I think he's just a weird dragon.
