Ivermectin for mites?

Luke9815 Sep 08, 2005 08:39 PM

I spoke with a vet about this the other day. It's an injection that can be administered to the snake that causes it's blood to be toxic to mites...in result, getting completely rid of them.
Has anyone used this ever?...Pros?...Cons?
I'd like to hear any thoughts on this.
I would kind of think this as a last resort...but I'd like to see if anyone had actually used this...seems pretty interesting...

I have used ivermectin before for mites on snakes, but never as an injection.

I was recommend to use an ivermectin mixture as a spray to treat the snakes, enclosure etc.

The mix was;

0.5 ml Ivermectin [cattle strength (was dubious about that too!!), it comes in a variety of strengths]

2 ml Propylene Glycol (spelling maybe slightly out on that)

500 ml De-Ionised water.

I have to say, that this mix was bloody awesome at ridding the mites!!!!!

make sure that when using any sprays to avoid the water dish at all times, best bet to remove for 10 mins during and after any spraying!!

Hope this helps

I thought that I read, I think it was in the Barker book on Ball Python's, that Ivermectin is harmful or unpredictable at best when given to Ball Pythons.

I use Pro-Vent A Mite by Pro-Products and it kill mites like crazy. You can use it as a preventative on your encloser also and its good for like 6 weeks.

I spoke with Bob Pound at Pro-Products and he could not have been more helpful. Bob knows more about mite prevention and elimination than anyone else Ive talked with.
