Question about sexing yearling corns

ALsnakehunter Sep 08, 2005 08:52 PM

I recently purchased a few corns and wish to breed them when they mature. How do I sex them? I have a probe set but do not want to injure the snakes by probing incorrectly. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks and happy herping.

Yearlings should be old enough and big enough to sex by eyeballing the tails.

Locate the vent. This is at the end of the body with the beginning of the tail directly behind it. Gently straighten the tail. Looking from the side of the tail, visually follow the tail from base to past the middle of the tail. Male tails have a slow taper and are more than half as thick at the mid point as at the tail's beginning. Female tails have a fast taper and are less than half as thick at the midpoint as at the tail's beginning.

Checking adults of known sex will help you learn the difference. Good luck.
