how do you get 2 leopard geckos to get along?

jterrapin Sep 08, 2005 09:53 PM

i have an older leopard gecko, and recently i just bought another one. shes a little smaller than my first one, but for some reason, my first gecko (jonna) is not liking the new one i got. can you suggest anything on how to get them used to each other. i put them in the cage and watched them for a while, and thought things were going to be ok, but when my little baby one gets near jonna, she hisses at her and runs after her. i know shes been by herself for a long time, and i dont know if that is the problem. is this usual?

she is not even 1 inch smaller. i told the guy that i wanted a female, and he looked at a few of them before giving this one to me. i cant personally tell a male from a female. is there an easy way to tell?

You can't MAKE them get along. They either do or they don't.

Something that might help is doing a very good cleaning of the tank to get out all of the scent of the original gecko. Move things around. Then neither gecko feels like they own that territory - they are both in a "new" place.

That MIGHT work. If it doesn't, then you shouldn't keep them together. Not all females are social.

1) QUARANTINE. 60 days. I prefer 90. Always, always, always!!

2) Don't house smaller geckos with larger ones. Ever.

3) DONT house a single male with a single female. And if she's not fully mature, she never will. This will affect her growth & his too.*

*exception being limited exposure to one and other for breeding purposes followed by immediate separation.

How big is the little one? Its hard to tell the sex on anything other than an adult leo.

you should always always always quarentine for 60-90days before mixing leos, you have no idea what funky diseases the new one might have and not be showing.

After the quarentine you can try introducing them in nuetral territory. Also, make sure the cage is big enoiugh (at least a 20gallon long) and that they have plenty of hides, at least one dry and one humid for each of them
