Question about a basking light

drasticplastic Sep 08, 2005 09:59 PM

I'm finally getting my first Aru tomorrow! I'm excited and will post pics when I get him/her. I wanted to try a basking light that I haven't worked with before so I bought a Zoo Med basking spot lamp 50W bulb. I plugged it in to see what it looked like and this thing is crazy bright! Will that be a problem?

At night it will be. They need a 12 on 12 off light and dark period, so you'll either need a red heat lamp for at night, or a ceramic heater.

Congratulations on your first chondro. I hate to say it , but this is not the time to try out new products and or husbandry techniques. Now is the time to go with what you know. I say this because, 1. chondros as a species are not very forgiving with their enviroments, 2. some individuals will adjust easily to a new enviroment even if husbandry is not 100%, while others will refuse to eat or "settle in" even when the enviroment is seemingly flawless. That is why it is best to have ones husbandry dialed in, if you run into a problem you have fewer errors to correct. What are your plans for nitetime heating? What kind of temps were you getting under the light and above the perch? What kind/size of enclosure are you implementing? Are you using a thermostat to control temps? As someone else suggested a ceramic heat emitter would be a much better way to go. Depending upon what sort of enclosure you are using, you could use a under tank heating unit. Place it on the lid or ceiling of the enclosure right above a perch. Basicly a cheap/inferior radiant heat panel. I'd suggest getting a copy of Maxwell's book "The Complete Chondro". If you have questions ask, but try to include as many details as you can, otherwise the good people here have to ask "you" more questions then your asking us. I hope all goes well with your Aru. Sorry I didn't explain everything better before, I was in a rush since I was posting from work. I'm using the exo terra all glass cage 12x12x18 for now. I don't think I'm going to use that spotlight after all, I have ceramic heat that I will use instead. When I tested my temps using the ceramic heat, I came up with about 83-85 toward the top perch and 79-81 on the bottom perch. I haven't received my humidity gauge yet so I can't test that now. I try and keep my animal room pretty warm so the drafts that enter the cages aren't colder than the inside of the cage temp, so far I've done a good job with other animals but have never owned a chondro before so I'm a little nervous. Hope this helps a litle.

I would suggest using a rheostat or dimmer switch with your heating unit. Keep an eye on the temps as this sounds like a new setup. Go to wal-mart and get a digital indoor/outdoor thermometer with humidistat only $15.00. I put the unit on the cool side and the outdoor probe right under the heat source on the perch. You get two temp readings as well as the humidity percentage at a glance, once you use one you'll wonder how you got by without it. Those exo-terras have a full screen top, you'll need to modify it to keep the humidity up. Let us know how things go on feeding day. Clint
