snappers and hibernation

start2finish01 Sep 08, 2005 11:41 PM

I have a baby common that has about a 4 inch carapace. I was wondering if they go into hibernation when in a regular setup in captivity(aquarium, basking bulb, healthy diet. etc..) and when(seasonal?). Thanks

i have a 4" common snapper, got it about a year ago. didnt hibernate over last winter. none of my reptiles have ever hibernated or even slowed down in colder months. my room usually stays extra toasty from all the heat lamps. there are ways you can artificially hibernate them. ive never done it though. fishpondinfo.com has a forum and tons of info pages on everything. if you cant find a page to help you, register, and post in the reptile section in the animals.

Oh, so basically it is the instict of the oncoming winter. That is why if kept in an outdoor pond they will hibernate naturally. Makes sense, thanks.
