Fattening up Uroplatus

viper69 Sep 09, 2005 05:11 AM

I have a question...what are good methods to fatten up mossy's before I move them across country. That is, other than crickets, what are good food items to feed them??

wax worms or butter worms would be the best thing to fatten them up with. you might have to offer them with forceps though. they dont move quite fast enough to capture the geckos eye. you cant just feed them wax worms, you need to give them like one cricket per every two or three wax worms to add some ruffage. if you just feed them wax worms, butterworms, or superworms without any ruffage theyll probably puke them up the next day. i usually get a hold of some wax worms before they start to breed, the wax worms really make a big difference.

Are your geckos losing weight? Is there any specific reason to try to make them fat? I noticed with some of my sikorae that they like a good chunk of space and tend to stress out some if they are not given it. If they are losing weight check their enclosure first.

I personally would avoid wax worms at all costs. too much junk that they typically won't eat on their own in general. a little thing to remember... if they don't eat it without assistance you probably shouldn't be feeding it to them.

i totally agree. i do again suggest more REAL food items. Uros' don't eat like AFT or Leos. come to think of it. my leos only like roaches, crix and butters but not often.

oh, and blaberus.com has THE best roaches, dubia! mine just eat those one up and won't even look at lobsters!

they will learn to recognize the forceps if you start them off with something they are used to. after a while they will get conditioned and take anything offered to them with the forceps. i try to feed my leaftails with forceps whenever possible. its easier to keep tabs on what theyre eating. wax worms are a good complement to theyre diet every now and then. they have like the highest amount of fat. its not good to have a lot of fat in their diets constantly but its good every now and then.

i agree butter worms or silk worms would be the best bulking type food..If it was taken. Uroplatus to my knowledge do not like worms of any sort. i've never seen any of them eat wax, small butters, small silks, meals ever!

i'd suggest roaches, crix and snails if you can find CLeaN ones.

i'd gut load the roaches and crix on oatmeal and gold fish flakes or crisps...nothing too good for my gex.

also, i'd dust the feed in not just minerall or other vitamin powder but you know who's gargoyle diet powder.

are you shipping these or driving them?

I may be driving w/them...however, if I get a second apartment..I would ship them perhaps...

What do people think would be best?

How far are you going? another state, cross country... it really depends on which is going to cause more time out of their enclosures and in potentially stressful movement. In comparison to shipping, driving usually tends to be the easiest if you are only going a few miles. If you are going cross country, shipping by far. But make sure you have a temp cage ready for them once they arrive.

But to give some insight with Usikorae overall, they are extremely hardy and tend to have few issues when being transported. I have had some get delayed by one day coming from Florida (two day trip for the geckos) and they did well for me (sad to say but I had some extra time to get my quarantine stuff in order and even planted them out). Anyways, I digress. They typically do fairly well in either case as long as you minimize the stress on them in the begining and end of their journey.

My female sikorae loves meal worms. I could hold them out in the middle of the day with forceps and she'll come running. Male wont have nothing to do with them though.

yeah for a while when i had a lot of super worms i would feed all of my leaftails super worms, but the males(henkels and sikorae) seemed to be more picky. they ll like em for a while then get tired and then they would like them again. there are very few lizards that dont get tired of superworms after a while. but they are still a good supplement as long as you only feed them one or two at a time. its always best to vary their diets. roaches would probably be best because theyre more nutritious and a whole lot cleaner then crickets, but not too many people want roaches runnin around in their house.
