Nice! More people should take feeding photos.

Any tips on getting my youngins to eat pellets?

beardiedragon Sep 09, 2005 10:06 AM

There are several different brands of pellets. Some Beardies show a preference for different brands, sometimes you have to trick them to get them started. Put a large paper plate in the cage and bounce the pellets off it, drop them in one at a time. BDs are attracted by movement. You can also try soaking them in different juices (no sugar added) then bounce them in. Offer the pellets first thing before other foods about an hour after lights on and then again throughout the day. Don’t starve him if he won’t eat them but try for a few days with only offering pellets. You can also feed moisten pellets to the crix about 1 hour before you feed them to your BD. The scent of the pellets will get on them and he may learn to associate the smell.

Killer pics! I think my favorite is the group photo where the one is wearing a piece of salad as a hat. That is priceless! You can really tell how much work you've put into those dragons, they are incredible!

Hmm The cricket smell idea might be a good one. Is dragon chow good to use as cricket chow normally?

beardiedragon Sep 09, 2005 10:55 AM

It is an expensive alternative but works fine. If you soak it in water to make it moist there is no need for extra moisture for them.

When you buy a big container of juvenile dragon pellets and your dragon won't eat them no matter what, they make good cricket food. Tried everything I could think of to get her to eat the pellets. Eventually grew tired of her really dirty looks whenever I did trick her in eating one.

there are some other tricks for picky BDs...
have you tried soaking the pellets with different flavored liquids like OJ, grape, cranberry, gatoraide... and then poking them with a toothpick and waving them in front of your BD, or after the pellet is moist press it onto a piece of thin fishing line and make it dance around to get your BDs attention??? That has worked for some of my customers when simply rolling it past them repeatedly did not.

Does your BD eat salad? if so you can make a paste out of the pellets and mix it with the salad so it is spread onto the leaves.

Or there is something else I can try? My beardie eats a few tiny pieces of squash a day, only if handfed. That seems to be a veggie that he prefers to others, but would never eat on his own. I tried shaking a pieces of different veggies/ fruts in front of him, and sometimes he would try something, but never more than 2 small pieces at a time. Problem is, next time I offer it (hand feeding again), he'll likely turn away from it/ close his eyes/ move away, etc... What can I do?
Oh, and also I tried with live food in his salad (he scilfully picks out whatever is alive WITHOUT getting a single piece of salad into his mouth), tried to lightly shake the plate to make pieces move and it got him interested for about a minute. Third time around he wouldn't even look at that trick. Please, advice. I'm about to give up on whole veggie thing (just kidding).

Thanks, Irina
