Has anyone had a male..NOT breed?

pythonsbaby Sep 09, 2005 08:54 AM

I have a 3 year old male that just doesnt get the hint. Last year I put him with 3 different females and never saw any breedings occur.

My temps are correct, weight etc. I am just wondering if anyone has ever had a dud, or if they did have a dud, was it hopeless or is there something else to help stimulate him into breeding?

Assuming that you are properly cycling him and the females (they are the ones that will deermine whether or not they'll let him breed) there are a couple of tricks you can use. You can try putting another male in with him they will compete for the chance at the female - or I've heard that you can just put a shed from another male in with them and that will be insentive for him to lock up with her. Or like it's been suggested before the centerfold of Reptile Mag may work!

Yep,shed swapping seems to work.
I have even put a shed from the female and a different male into the intended breeder males cage.( I can only suggest doing this with a very well established colony though.)

yes.I got one or two that just didn't get it.but I have backup for them all......

.....first thing would be to check and make sure it's not a girl......

I know more than one person that had the male lay eggs and a female be the daddy of them.......

True, I have made sure. I think my females all roughly 1000 to 1200 grms last year may not have been ready either. This year they are all over 1500, grms. I will save a shed from some of my other males, I will definitely try that. Thanks all.

I have a 66% chance het caramel male that didn't finally produce offspring until he was 5. You never know though how many of those years where due to the females I put with him not being ready. Stick with it, every one of his direct ancestors for millennia successfully reproduced so chances are so will he, eventually.
