Best way to lizard scent a pinkie?

shadowmonkey01 Sep 09, 2005 12:17 PM

Whats the best way to lizard scent a pinkie.Do I put the mouse in the anole tank, or put the anoles in a deli cup with the pinkie, or do I need to filet an anole, got a baby that wont eat and this seems like the most suggested method of getting them to eat. And has any one used the drops called lizard maker?

If you want to keep the lizard alive... just break off part of its tail and rub the blood from the break on the pinky's nose. The lizard will survive the loss of its tail.

If you don't care about keeping the lizard alive, kill it, skin it, and put a small square of skin over the nose of the pinky. You can then freeze the rest of the lizard and use it for other troublesome feeders or for future feedings with this snake. It won't be any good by next year, though.

Some people recommend washing (with water) the smell of pinky off the pinky first. I've found that if the snake is going to eat anole-scented, it doesn't matter either way. Plus, they start to associate the pinky smell with food if you leave it, and it helps the transition to non-scented pinks.

"Mice. And rats. If that bothers you, I can call them 'cows' instead."

When I have had to scent pinks I took shed skin from the lizard and placed it on the pinkie. Once the lizard and pinkie were in the same container and the snake ate the pink because there was enough of the right smell around. I would suggest keeping the lizard and saving it's sheds to put pieces on pinks when you feed.

The best method I have found is to get the anole to bite the pink...Anole saliva seems to have more "anole scent" that really gets the corns going...

I went to petco today one of the guys said they had some baby anoles in back.Anyways to make a long story short bought one, corn snake couldnt wait to get anole. Hope this is alright I know some anoles have a bad parasite load, but atleast he ate .

If you bought and fed that anole to your corn, because it was refusing to otherwise eat,you did the right thing, in my opinion.

I have heard people being chastised for feeding a store-bought anole to a corn hatchling, because of the fear of parasite problems, but that avenue of 'logic" has never made much sense to me, when the "big picture" is considered.

After all, if the animal is still living in six months, I can cure what ever parasitical exposure it might be suffering, but death resulting from starvation is a tough fix, no matter how skilled your herp vet might be!
