More Sceloporus egg problems "Maybe"

jasonw Sep 09, 2005 12:23 PM

Ok so far all but 2 of the eggs have gone bad, This is my first attempt at this so I am a bit worried that the remaining 2 eggs will not survive. One of the remaining eggs appears to be leaking now. It has been exactly one month since they were left in the cage. I though maybe the eggs is leaking because a lizard is trying to break out but then in my mind referred to the last post with said the incubation was closer to 60 days. I hope I am doing everything right and would love to save the remainder of the eggs, So far this has not been a good first experience with eggs for me. To make matters even worse it would appear my female if gravid again, I have not learned to terribly much with the eggs I currently have so I am in fear of just screwing up the next clutch that is left. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Do you think a little leakage is normal? Remember I am a beginner with eggs so that may sound like a stupid question. Thanks for the help.

Leakage is not normal and the egg is most likely not going to make it.(is there a whole in the shell? or are you seeing condensation?) I would open it up and see what's inside. If a viable baby, great! If not, no loss because it would've died anyway.

I have found that there is no substitution for first hand experience and mentorship. I would look for a herp club in your area and/or others who breed reptiles. Ask if you can see their incubation setups, and if they would help you with yours.

The only loss from a batch of spoiled eggs is the stress on the mother. I would perhaps seperate her from the male, and breed less often... even when you do get better at incubating eggs. Ask other sceloporus breeders on there opinion on this.

Thank you, first of all, please excuse all my errors as i am typing this with 1 hand sence my other is mangled and in bandages, I have had to learn a lot with my left hand the past few days lol There are no clubs near me. I live way out in the midle of knowhere. The egg in question apears to be breached as the other egg has no liquid on it at all. I like your idea and may tryi it but unfortunatly like i said I only have one good hand now wich is my left and I am right handed, maybe my wife can help but we will have to see. I did not breed this particular indevidual, she was gravid when collected. I will put a note up at my local petstore next time I go to town and see if there are any other local breeders. thanks for the help, I will keep everyone up to date and no doubt ask more questions. If I do cut the egg opend should I see an embrio after a month of incubation?

I don't know enough specifically about sceloporus to give you an answer to what you will find. Anything short of a slightly premature hatchling will be dead, or will die shortly.

I cut the eggs and found nothing but milky fluide, bummer. I hope the last eggs is still good but kinda doubt it now
