Coincidence or do they know the weather change was coming?

JM Sep 09, 2005 02:50 PM

I was just wondering what y’alls experience if any has been with feeding and season changes. Most of my BPs went off feed last winter. No big deal. The last several months they have been making up for it. They have been eating me out of house and home. I couldn’t pull enough rats fast enough for them. Every one of them has just been a feeding machine and my breeder rats have not been able to keep up. I live in Southern CA and it’s also been in the 100F everyday the last couple months.

Wednesday was feeding day. I dropped rats in all the tubs~ but about 80% of them did not eat this week. It was approx 100F on Wednesday this week too~ but today the temp has dropped to about 80F.

Do you think they somehow knew the temps were getting ready to change? Or they just wanted to see how funny it would be to see me try to house all those extra rats this week!

Just curious what everyone experience has been with this. Now I’ve got to go process and freeze about 100 small rats before NEXT weeks pups grow out!

LOL - I was wondering the same thing - my bunch has been pounding down the rats lately (I even have a mouse eater that has been pounding small rats) I've been joking with people that they must know breeding season is coming - but this weeks feedings were somewhat bleak - now it's overcast with cool weather predicted all week - could they have know all along????

Cheryl - do you have a table at the show this weekend?

No~ I'm not going to have a table. Maybe next year. I'm not ambitious enough for that just yet! I'll be at the show all day tomarow and at the auction though. Will you be there? I'll be the short, fat red head with a big, hairy, scary looking guy. Wait.....that describes easily 50% of the people that will be there tomarow doesn't it! LOL!!

Your in Southern Ca too right? That is interesting that yours did the same thing this week that mine did. I think it's a good possibility they somehow knew the weather was going to change~ which is pretty amazing considering they live in my house with the Central Air, and the weather had not actually changed yet~ SO HOW did they know?!? Animals really are much more perceptive than we are aren't they!

they know everything......when it will rain,be hot, cool, storm will be really bad......all of it....winter coming or winter over......they know it.......

and mine are in a room in the basement with a heater running all the time......trying to keep temps the same all the time,........the temos will drop.....you don't have to do it......winter will make the heaters not work as well......they will know it is breeding season...

good luck........

breed when it's cold..and I didn't even start wearing an extra shirt to work yet so it isn't cold......

Hey,

Yeah, my best eaters are still eating, but not as much. And the good eaters have shut off. The babies are still munching hard, but the adults.....wow- big change.

Looking forward to a great season!

May God bless,
