Got my silkies! YAY! just a couple feeding questions...

AlteredMind99 Sep 09, 2005 04:44 PM

I got my silkworms today and they are set and ready to go. My beardie loves them (not a surprise, i havent ever seen her not try to eat anything that moves!) and my leos are a little confused but im sure they'll catch on.

now here is my question, how do i feed them to my critters? Its easy with my beardie, she will eat them as fast as i drop them, but my leos are slower and my BTS wont come out if i am in the room. I know this is the beardie forum but i figured it moves pretty fast and i can get some quick answers, plus most people that have silkies seem to be BD owners.

I was going to leave them in dishes but their sticky little feet seem pretty capable of climbing out of any dish.

What do you guys use to feed them to your animals? and not just your beardies...to anything

Thanks

They can climb anything, but they are not fast movers. When I had Luna I would just place them on a branch near her regular basking and feeding places. If you want to keep them somewhat contained, you can put a bit of chow in the dish with them - if they have food they will not wander (except to molt and then they just go up the side of something). They cannot go full cycle with any food other than the chow or Mulberry leaves, but they do like butternut squash, so if you inlcude that in the salad, and maybe off to one side, they will likely stay put. I am sure the squash tastes better than the chow to the herps!!

Not sure what and how you feed your leos but maybe this will help

If my BDs are not ready to eat when I need to feed them I put some grated carrots on the salad and it keeps the silkies content to stay and munch.

yes, I think it is an "orange" thing - lol! but they will also munch on greens, but orange veggies seem to work well

I have fed silkies to crested geckos, rats and bearded dragons so far. I dont' really do anything special, other than dropping the silks into the cage and let them wonder whereever they want. Silkworms don't wonder to far and eventually the reptile just eats them. I sometimes put them in the salad bowl with bearded dragons, to better encourage my dragon to eat what is in the salad bowl (including the salad). For my geckos, I just drop them into the cage, sometimes I leave a small piece of silkworm chow for the worms to eat, if they are not consumed by my geckos right away.

I haven't fed my blue tongue skinks any silkworms yet (need to buy some chow before I start hatching out my silkworm eggs), but I suspect just dropping a few near where the skinks are hiding, will draw out the skink to eat them. I only had my skinks for about three days now, so they don't come out when I am arround at all.
