My dad said that he would go to the train tracks and catch a certain kind of snake. It was brown and maybe shiny, and about 6 inches. I went there and did find as much, of course, but saw about 4 of them. What kind might they be.

Carphopus amoenus. This page is from Virginia, but they are also found in MD.

what color was the belly?pink?than yeah it's a worm snake....if belly was whitish,it is likely a smooth earth snake(Virginia valeriae)
