Anyone ever heard of crested geckos eating fruit? . . .opinions please

nathan23 Sep 09, 2005 06:50 PM

I know they relish babyfood, but what about real fruit? I have two juvinile cresteds that love baby food. I decided to try to see if they would like real fruit. So far just today alone they have eaten sliced up grapes, strawberries and honeydew melon. I only gave each one a small peice of each. But I would have to say they absolutly loved it. I cant see any real harm in this as baby food is ok for them. They still get ample supply of crickets as well. The fruit would be a once in a while treat. Any insight or opinions on this would be great.

thanks,
nathan

Cresteds LOVE fruit. I feed mine a mixture of fresh bananas, apricots, mango, strawberries, peaches, low-fat plain yogurt, and a jar of chicken baby food... all blended together. Mmmm... Just be sure to stay away from anything with citrus.

yeah, those all sound safe. only thing i can suggest is be sure to remove the skin off of the grapes or anything that's got a skin on it. obviously you're cutting it up so it shouldn't be too tough. i just know that the skins are hard for them to digest

Fresh fruit is deffinitely something crested geckos can eat. They certainly don't find jars of babyfood in the wild *grin*. You can chop the fruit up really fine or toss them into a food processor and make a puree which you can freeze in an icecube tray for later meals. A little multivitamine and calcium powder mixed in improves the nutritional value as well. All kinds of fruits can be used, all melons, peaches, pears, necterines, mangos, berries of all kinds, can be mixed together. Just remember to add some protein in the diet, either by offering insects couple times a week or chicken/turkey babyfood.

Fruits to avoid are any citris fruits, such as oranges, lemons, gratefruit etc.
