True Florida king size question

Lampropeltis23 Sep 10, 2005 12:02 PM

Just trying to chase down some facts. I have read and heard that there are records of Florida kingsnakes (what herpetoculturists term "brooks" reaching 6 feet or more. I have owned 1 male myself that was exactly 5 feet. I have seen several large ones for sale (either at pet stores or from breeders). I would like to see pics or get verification in print of anyone who owns or has record of a 6 foot "brooks"

I have yet to see a Floridana / Brooksi that is over 6 feet in length, but I do have a 5 year old male that is 69 inches (5'-9" in length that should be over 6 feet by next year...

I would love to see if there any larger ones out there myself.

Geeez John what are feeding that guy Nutria???

jlassiter Sep 10, 2005 04:57 PM

Actually Toby I feed it about 5 mice every week......He could easily eat a couple rats, but i don't have any other snake this big so I don't buy rats just yet.....
Nutria is a good idea though.....Would be a better use for them then the fur trade......LOL

This guy was 6'4" at the time of his death. He had a head like a buick with an appetite to match. He was a longterm WC we got from Glades Herp back in 1999. John how did you get measurements on your Hypo ? Did you use serpwidgets or some other method ?

I used Serpwidgets on a pic I took early this year...I need to take another shot of him and try it again.
Or what other method(s) do you suggest?

BTW 76" is a monster......How old was it?

I really liike the serpwidgets program. I must say thats the biggest damn Hypo Brooksi Ive ever seen ! That Big Florida King my buddy Mike is holding was WC and at that time it was pretty big I guess so I imagine it was well over 15 years old. It shouldnt have died but it got some kinda weird infection at my buddies house and he didnt do anything about it unfortunatley.

any chance his being dead resulted in a longer measurement than alive? I mean, i know you can sort of stretch a dead snake, but without that effort would the relaxation of death (figuratively speaking, not metaphysically) change the length at all?

Both Terry, he was measuring a bit bigger when alive If I remember correctly but it was like an inch difference. He was also over 6lbs ! You dont see many that big anymore.
