How often are yours fed?

tetrafish2 Sep 10, 2005 03:49 PM

Hi,

I was wondering how much and how often do you feed cresteds. I'm just considering in getting a crested but not sure yet.
How often should a crested be fed baby food and when should I give it crickets? Thank you!

I make sure my cresties have fresh baby food in their cage each night and I give them crickets about once a week. You can also use the T-rex meal replacement powder and mix it with the baby food so they get all the proper nutrients that they need. Once they start eating the powder mix, you don't even have to feed them the crickets anymore. It has all the protein they need right in the powder. I personally still like to give them crickets, because they have an instinct to hunt and I think they enjoy chasing down their food every once in a while. I've personally kept a lot of species of geckos and these are by far my favorite, as well as the easiest to care for. Hope this helps.

My cresteds are fed an alternating diet of crickets one night, and Clark's Frugivorous Diet the next. Sometimes I also whip up some "Super Mixture" for them... which is just a combination of fresh bananas, mangos, apricots, peaches, strawberries (with seeds cut off.. they don't like the seeds much), low-fat plain yogurt, and a jar of chicken baby food all blended together.

They do fine if fed three times per week, but they aren't going to starve to death if you have to leave them without food for a week or so. More often is obviously better, but I've found that it's usually a waste of food to try feeding them every day...something nervous new keepers are usually inclined to do.

For example, if they just ate a ton of crickets on Monday, they're not going to be very inclined to eat a non-live diet on Tuesday. I give them a day or two between feedings and my geckos breed and grow just as fast as any other Crested Gecko.

As far as the ratio of food to live prey, I try to alternate, but it's easier to drop crickets into the cage, so a lot of times, they end up getting a lot more crickets than they do food.
