I know that Aussie critters (Oxyuranus, Pseudonaja, Notechis to name a few) are not exported and I was wondering if anyone can enlighten me on the rationale behind this.

I've always understood it's to 'protect their wildlife'... as if it's the pet trade that's the threat. They don't export ANYTHING, everything we have from there in this countr was pretty much smuggled in or decended from zoo stock.
