Can you breed a Red or Blue with a arg b&W

ZEKyle Sep 10, 2005 09:29 PM

I have an arg b&w that is almost a year old. Pretty soon on the next few months I will be upgrading its 60gal reptile tank to a 6 foot enclosure. When I get the enclosure and find out 100 percent what sex mine is I plan on gettin a mate/ companion for it. I was curious its possbile to breed my Arg. B&W with a red, blue, or hybrid redxblue. I think someone told me you could but the offspring will be sterile. If that is true I think I will just get another Arb B&W but I would really like to get another type of tegu to put in with it. I really like the blues and hybrid redxblue crosses from st. pierre. Anyone's advice with experience breeding tegus will be greatly appreciated.

thanks

People keep saying that the offsring will be sterile without any proof (in other words they don't know so they assume they will be sterile - these same people said the same thing about RedXBlue crosses which I have now bred to the 3rd generation so it is not true of that cross )

However it is very unlikely that you will be able to breed an Argentine black and white tegu with a blue tegu and hatch out live babies . I have never been able to do this to date and neither has anyone else . I am not saying it is impossible but in my opinion it is not very likely as these two species have a considerable difference in the time it takes eggs to hatch when hatching both types at controlled temperature (blue tegus take 30% longer to hatch and I believe this is why all the babies die in the egg even though they are fully formed )

Argentine black and white to an Argentine red tegu would be more likely to reproduce as there is only a 15% differnce in incubation time between the two . (I have never been able to do this either )

Argentine black and white to a redXblue - don't know never tried it .

Argentine red and blue - not easy to do but I have done it and the eggs are fertile and the babies are not sterile .

Thanks a lot for your help. I really respect you guys in the Tegu world. I was asking about keeping a pair together and they told me I need to find out what mine is and I can either get if its a female another female or male. THey told me if its a male I can only put in a female with it. So that being the case it makes no difference what type of tegu it is right? but the way their habitats are diff that may be a problem so if I dont decide to get another b&W i will just go wirh a blue or redxblue cross to put in with it.

I keep multiple males together with out any problems usually .
It depends on the individual animals personality .
The only time I have problems normally keeping two males together is when I only have one female in the cage with them if I add more females there are usually no problems . Two lone males of the same size usually get along .

I would not keep two of any tegus together if they were not of similar size though .

I have kept Argentines with blues , reds , redXblues with no problems in the past . They might all be different but they can live in the same cage together they will just use the same resources differently ... ie a blue will use the same basking site but instead of sitting under for a long time to warm up once per day as an Argentine would it will use it on and off all day long for very short periods of time .

Beings as you guys always claimed them to be subspecies of the Colombian tegus, I guess that means you successfully bred them with Colombian black & whites or golds. What do the crosses look like? How come you don't sell ColombianXblues?
