caught a toad

I caught a toad today.. I'm assuming its a fowler's and not an american since it has 3-4 warts on its dark spots. Am I right on this? Also, how do I sex the toad besides looking at its throat? I don't know what dark would be since I've never seen the difference between a male and a female.
