Please help with Boa locality

JohnRobinson Sep 10, 2005 10:44 PM

I have a pair of Central American boas that were sold to me as Nicaraguans. I have perused the fine websites of Vin Russo and Gus Rentfro and others and I have seen no photos of a Nicaraguan that look like mine. The pair I have seem to match the boas from Cancun much more closely than any of the Nicaraguans. The belly has quite a bit of orange and black. Could you please share your opinions and expertise with me on this. The one pictured is going in to a shed. I can post a pic of the other one too if you want to see it. Thanks!

Here is the Male so that you can get a good look at the pair. They are very similar in pattern and color. He just shed.

Where did you buy the pair? Who did you get it from? I'm not too familiar with Cancun locales but from the pics I have seen, yours looks similar. However, contact your source of the animals. Maybe they can shed light on it. I know Nicaraguans can vary quite a bit. The head has a typical nicaraguan look to it...I don't know why..I can't describe it but when I look at Nics vs other boas, the head just seems slightly different. As for the belly, I currently have a wide variety of about 2 dozen nics and none have an orange belly (yet). I say 'yet' b/c my nics tend to undergo amazing color changes and some have even matched the best hog island boas.

Thanks for taking the time to send some pics of your beauteous Nics! They are pretty dark and in many ways are colored like mine. My pair has very dark brown, almost black tail saddles with no distinguishable black borders. In yours the tail saddles are lighter orange in the middle and get redder toward the edges and are then bordered by black. As you can see the bellys on mine are speckled with black and have a rather orange background color. This orange intensifies on the sides of the snakes. I really am not trying to make a case for these being something other than Nicaraguans. They were sold to me by an individual who bought them from an unknown reptile dealer as Nics. They just don't appear to be like any Nics I have seen and I don't want to breed them in with my ohter Nics if they are from another locality. Thanks for your coments and time and for sharing the pics of your beauties!

but more or less what Carl said..... HUGE variety in Nic appearance..

if I were to see that snake and not have any info, I would say it could have Mexican blood, but not cancun, perhaps sonoran or tumaharan.. I would also maybe guess some costa rican influence.

If I sold you that Nic, I know for a fact it was imported from Nicaragua.

I didn't see Nics on Gus's site, but I did see them on Vin's site..
He has been captive breeding the hypo line for a few years and will have very light, clean, colorful examples of normals.

Here are some random Nic shots.. These three are ALL hypos.. but look how different they look! and even moreso compared to Vin's captive produced hypos and possible super hypos..!

thanks, Take care - Joe
