Can someone tell me what type of Snake this is?

dustinm23 Sep 10, 2005 10:55 PM

I saw this snake in the field behind my house. I live in Ontario, Canada, in the Niagara region (near Niagara Falls)
I have a dog and small children, so I want to know if I need to be concerned about this snake. Any help is much appreciated.

It's a Garter Snake, very common and harmless, the exact sub species of Garter I don't know off hand, some one from the east coast will probably come along and chime in.

No need for concern. That is a Common Garter Snake (Thamnophis sirtalis), of either the Eastern (sirtalis), or Maritime (pallidulus) subspecies.

Thanks for the quick replies. Obviously I know nothing about snakes! I thought it may just be a garter snake but I wasn't sure given that it was trying to swallow that toad!

Thanks again,
Dustin

Swallowing toads is what they do. They feed on ectothermic animals. Amphibians & fish comprise the vast majority of their diet.

"No need for concern"
Unless you're the toad
