Question about temperment.

drasticplastic Sep 10, 2005 11:18 PM

I just got my Aru shipped to me yesterday, I know that it was a very stressful trip for him so I don't blame him for being a little pissy. How long should I expect him to keep up his attitude? I have read on these posts that many people with Aru's claim theirs are very tame and docile. Everytime mine sees me, he gets into striking mode and shakes a little. Like I said I understand that the trip was stressful, I don't think he's hungry because I fed him a good sized fuzzy last night but he still looks like he wants to strike. I don't know....I know I'm probably getting worried over nothing, I have never been bit yet over the years and I'd like to keep my record going. Any info would be appriciated. Thanks.

Not much you can do.

Leave it be, usualy chondros calm down after about a year. They just "Snap out of it" and sometimes they don't. This is one species you just can't really attitude curve. You get what you get. Your best bet in the future is to buy an animal from calm parents or get a yearling that is calm.

Make sure you have a removeable perch so you can clean with out stressing out the snake and or taking a bite on the hand or elsewhere.

My guess is its a snappy baby, be happy you have a snappy one with a good biting (feeding) response!

The aru I recently picked up is very calm and tame, but bit me last night instead of his mouse a couple times before taking the pinky I was offering. Since you just got him, best you can do is now that he's eaten leave him alone for a couple days...block his view of you if you need to walk by him often...and let him calm down and adjust to his new home.

All good advice so far.... and, just for good measure, are you sure it is truly an aru locale baby? I recently saw an advertisement for an aru baby that sure looked a lot more biak type to me.

It's true, snappy aru types are generally pretty few and far between. I LOVE the natural beauty of a pretty aru!!!

he/she was sold to me as an Aru, and to tell you the truth since I'm a beginner at GTP's, I can't tell them apart yet. Here are some pics I took before his meal.

Can't be 100% certain, but from those pics it sure looks like the aru type babies I've had too. And... in the palm of your hand, lol, if that was a feisty biak baby, you'd be in trouble already!

I bet that little one will settle right down with a little time to acclimate to it's new surroundings, I'd almost swear that was a smile on that face!! Very pretty

Looks like an aru to me. But with the size of it, you should know for sure within the next 6 months...but just to be sure on that, what the age of the animal? I know my biak started getting green at about 1yr 3 months.

Just another good example why people should only buy from captive breeders. This way there would be no confusion where the animal stems from.
