Hibernation

Herpguy24 Sep 11, 2005 08:24 AM

Hi, my RES are starting to dig in there pebbles. Does this mean that they are trying to hibernate? Will they ever grow out of it? I don't want them to dig in one part especially, if they get under it then they can't get back out. It's a little 67 cent thing from walmart to sit plants in so that the water won't go everywhere. I'm using it as a prop so that my turtle basking area can be completely out of the water. Oh yeah, they are inside. Thanks, bye.

if they can feel a difference in temperature they may try to hibernate. you may want to turn up there heat or allow them to hibernate. i wouldnt put something in my tank that i wouldnt want them to get into. if you want to know how to hibernate them you can got to the forum at fishpondinfo.com. there are lots of info pages there, if you cant find the info you need, just register and post in an approproate forum.

red ears dont usually hibernate unless they live outside in an area that gets cold.

theyre foraging for food. feed em some romaine lettuce to fill thier gut

I heard from someone that lettuce is just a waist of stomach space?

Iceburg lettuce is a waste of space, and that is what most people are referring to when they say "lettuce". My RES LOVE the "spring mix" stuff that is prepackaged. This consist of Red and Green Romaine, as well as Spinach and some others. My male will eat the purple "stuff" before he eats the green, go figure. They just like the more fancy lettuce LOL. It is pretty cheap to by the pre-packaged stuff, and it last about a week, maybe two. Hope that helps.

One more question, my twp RES have white spots on them. How can I fix that?

You should remove the spinach from the mix when you feed it to your turtles. Spinach contains elements which prevent the proper absorption of calcium. While it may not effect the turtle to have it every now and then it is just better to avoid it when there are so many other green options for it.
