I've never had this happen before! My beautiful Tempest got some of the electrical tape stuck on her. I had it holding some silk vines and she managed to get it on her. I removed part of it, but some is pretty stuck on and I'm afraid to injure her if I try to take it off. I put olive oil on the exposed parts and cut off the excess, but I don't know what else to do. She's been such a gem too. Never tried to bite while my husband and I worked on her.

I would try rubbing alcohol, what you need is something which will disolve the glue. Clint

i agree with clint... but their are so many chemicals that might hurt the snake...

if it were me......... i would put her in the same type setup as you would if she was having a bad shed and hope that it loosens up the bond...

i feel for ya meg.... this sucks... i hope you snake is not injured... and with any luck maybe she will go into shed very soon...

good luck, and please keep us posted

just my opinion but i would go to the hospital or if you know someone who works at a nursing home and ask them if i could have some medical adhesive remover pads im sure since they are harmless to human skin that it wouldnt hurt the snake any just a suggestion

wow, thats kinda weird,i cant imagine how he got so wrapped up in it,if i had to guess,id imagin it wouldnt be possible for a chondro to get that stuck on regular electric tape.is it the thin black kind?if its the type im thinking of that stuff doesnt stick well to anything but itself,if its the silver kinda, then i could see how it could happen.anyway,i think both are water proof so water will not loosen it much, yea olive oil is what id try and slowly pull a little at a time while adding oil to the loosened parts to keep them from sticking again.good luck and if anyone knows a nontoxic solvent, please mention it.if youre forced to use alchol,id rather use drinking type rather than rubbing you buy in the pharmacy,i think the drinking kinda is less toxic, the rubbing kind is actually a poison.id rather not use either though.

The olive oil appears to be doing it's job. I just went to get her back out to try to make another try at soaking the tape off, and over 90% of it was already off. I trimmed that off, and put more oil on the tape and the edges to soak in. There doesn't appear to be any real scale damage, although I'm sure she lost a few small ones. No tears anyway. I might escape the results of my stupidity this time! I'm so careful, I can't believe I was that dumb!! I'm so lucky to have such a great tempered snake. When I worked on her just now in the enclosure, she never once tried to bite. She just held onto the perch with her tail while I held her body and swabbed and trimmed the tape. What an awesome animal she is!!! I hope she isn't too stressed out by this.

Just pull the tape off carefully, its not superglue.

MegF Sep 12, 2005 09:28 AM

Unfortunately, it may as well have been. It was so stuck to her skin I was afraid of causing more damage trying to remove it, then leaving it with a bunch of oil. All the tape came off on it's own, with no damage to her scales, and she was out looking for food last night! The olive oil worked like a charm, and if anyone ever has this problem, I would say try it first. It's non toxic, got the tape off without me having to pull it off her, and it makes them very shiny afterwards....just an added bonus. I talked to Troy last night, and he said that vegetable oil is what he uses if any of the snakes should escape and get stuck to the glue traps they put out to catch escaped crickets. He lets them soak in the oil, and they come right off the glue in just a few minutes. No matter....she's tape free, uninjured, and seems to be back to normal. She's so awesome!! I think that's what made me feel even worse. She's so sweet. If she had spent her time trying to chew my arm off or something, I would say you deserve what ya get!! (Just kidding of course), but she was so gentle and never tried to bite, or really fight me.

yea meg,all of mine are sweet too.when i got my first chondro,i was like,"what the hell was all the fuss about??"i had read all sorts of posts about how bad the bite is,how large their teeth are,how they are a look but never touch snake, bla bla bla...now i know some are,and i may have just been lucky, but at least with mine, they have never tried to bite except one of my snakes does something funny,at night when his cage is dark and i want to look at him,ill turn on his light and "bam!!" hell strike at the air!..i guess hes just taken by surprise and the light being turned on scares him,but as soon as i turn the light on i can put my hand right in there and take him right out.mine are just as nice as any ball python i have ever seen.only difference is chondros are much better looking and actually do something and dont sit around all day.anyway,i was glad to hear how everything turned out.i was thinking about you this weekend and hoped everything was going to turn out fine.i know how much you like your little guy.

MegF Sep 12, 2005 05:30 PM

Yeah, she's a great little girl. Couldn't have asked for a better first chondro. I'm going to be getting a second one very soon. A very nice red Jayapura. I'm just waiting on delivery of my Herpstat, and then for a day off so that I can be here for delivery. In the meantime, the vine is now safely attached with a zip tie. I'm hoping for no further disasters!
